Tik Tok Ban: How Influencers Can Prepare

Proposals for a TikTok ban in the US could be a major set-back for Small businesses, especially for companies with a larger audience on the platform who rely on it to generate revenue.

As of 2023, TikTok has been one of the most popular social media platforms nearly surpassing WhatsApp and Instagram with over 1.5 billion monthly active users!

TikTok is also the leading social media network for impulse purchases with 55% of TikTok users having made an impulse purchase on the App. So with those rankings, there’s no wonder why companies are investing millions in advertising on TikTok to promote their products and services. But with the United States House of Representatives planning to ban the social media giant, Small business owners may be left scrambling to find other ways to reach their audience.

That's why I encourage my clients to diversify their marketing efforts. Because social media networks rapidly change and can be unpredictable. After all the power to lock  social media accounts for violating community rules is decided by executives at Meta, Snapchat, Linkedin etc. For those reasons, its important for small businesses to protect their online business by saving content (images, videos and written posts) building an email list and owning the domain name for websites.

Save Your Work

Nowadays, there's various ways to Save content. One way is to regularly back up website and social media content by using a secure cloud storage service. Most tech companies like Dropbox, AWS (amazon Cloud services) Apple icloud, Google Drive and Microsoft One Drive offer both free and paid versions of cloud storage services in addition to those offered by web hosting companies.

Another content-saving option is to create an archive folder and save it on an external hard or computer server for added protection. This way, content is safe and easily accessible in case of any software updates, technical issues or data loss. Having multiple backups of your data is always a good idea!

Furthermore, saving content on a personal or office computer is still common. While this option comes with the most risks, it can be convenient for quick access to files when you don't have an internet connection. Just be sure to regularly back up these devices to prevent losing valuable data. Remember, it's better to be safe than sorry when it comes to safeguarding important information.

Build An Email List

The next steps you can take to protect your online business is to build an email list. With over 4 billion email users worldwide—Small businesses, can’t ignore or neglect email marketing. It's one of the most proven and trusted online methods to communicate with customers.

Email marketing campaigns allow businesses to capture leads, store subscriber data and learn more about their behavior. Most email marketing software comes with features that allow you to review analytics and gather feedback. With an email list, entrepreneurs don't have to depend on social media. Get started by adding an email opt-in form on your fan pages and website to allow people to sign up. Once they subscribe, fans can stay connected regardless of TikTok bans!

Purchase Domains

Last but not least, owning the domain name(s) for websites is another fantastic way to protect an online business. It's highly recommended, because of the power it gives creators!  A domain name provides you with more control over the company's brand.

Domains can strengthen an entrepreneur's online presence, even if TikTok is no longer accessible. Businesses can send followers to blog articles, sales pages, or websites to stay up-to date or make a purchase. Owning a domain name for your website provides users with peace of mind, knowing that there's a reliable way to connect with customers, regardless of what changes occur with social media networks.

So, take action and prepare your small business for the potential TikTok ban in the United States by saving your work, building an email list and owning a domain nameIf you're feeling overwhelmed and have questions about this process leave a comment or visit our website to review my Business coaching program.
